2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD – King of the Hill

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Chevrolet may no longer use its “Like a Rock” tagline, but the 2011 Silverado HD certainly feels as if it’s fashioned from granite. In the ever-increasing heavy-duty pickup arms race, Chevrolet has made many significant improvements to its already formidable worksite battleships for the 2011 model year.

Taking a bottom-to-top approach, the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD gains an all-new frame that could gird bridge spans. Fully boxed, with larger cross sections and tubular cross members, the new frame also has an increased percentage of high-strength steel. The backbone improvements make the Silverado HD’s frame a much stiffer foundation for the completely new, independent front suspension.

Rendered from forged steel and cast iron, the suspension arms look like they’d be equally at home on a diesel locomotive. The super-durable construction also improves the load capacity of the front end. Bash over rocks at a job site or pound it mercilessly while plowing snow, the Silverado HD’s front suspension can shrug it off.

No matter what kind of violence is happening at the wheels, inside the cab of the Silverado HD, things have been retuned with an eye on increased serenity. Engine and transmission mounts have been upsized, and the significantly stiffer frame throws in to help quell vibration as well. Hydraulic body mounts further isolate occupants from external chaos, providing respite during toil.

A new heart adds muscle in the engine room as well. The new 6.6-liter turbocharged DuraMax diesel leads the heavy-duty pickup class in torque (a whopping 765 lb/ft) while also taking the fuel economy crown. The increased economy leads to a 63 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions, too. Fully compatible with B20 biodiesel, the DuraMax is teamed with an unburstable Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission to put all the torque to the job.

If your needs don’t require the turbodiesel, the 2011 Silverado HD can also be equipped with a 6.0-liter Vortec V8. Burning gasoline and sporting variable valve timing, the Vortec V8 has a revised camshaft profile to enhance torque delivery and drives through a newly strengthened Hydra-Matic 6L90 automatic transmission to make the best use of the brawn.

If your routine includes lots of towing, the Silverado HD has it covered. Nothing in the heavy-duty truck segment has a higher fifth-wheel rating than the Silverado HD’s 20,000 pounds. Conventional hitches aren’t far behind, either, at 16,000 pounds of capacity. Towing is enhanced by the DuraMax diesel’s exhaust brake. All Silverado HDs have trailer sway control, integrated trailer brake control, hill start and braking assist and automatic grade braking. All 2011 Silverado HDs are packed with the tools to confidently show the load who’s boss.

Don’t get the impression that it’s all work and no fun with the Silverado HD either. The exterior design alone is handsome and sculpted. This truck looks great whether it’s splattered in mud on the job or newly waxed on a lazy afternoon. Roomy extended cabs are easily accessed by rear doors that swing in a 170-degree arc, and cabins are filled with available technology like Bluetooth and standard OnStar (version 9). USB connectivity and mobile Wi-Fi are also available.

StabiliTrak electronic stability control’s safety chops are enhanced by a rear suspension that has been redesigned to keep towing a calm endeavor. The brawny frame improves crashworthiness, and there are plenty of airbags, too, including available seat/pelvic thorax and head side-curtain airbags for 2500HD models.

Strong like never before, filled with technology to make working easier, safer and more enjoyable, the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD stomps into the segment at the top of the class. Putting a cherry on top of the sundae is GM’s five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, the best out there. With an MSRP of only $27,965, just call it King of the Hill.

Kelly Blue Book recognizes 3 Chevys as “Top 10 Family Cars”

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com recognized three Chevrolet vehicles in their 2010 Top 10 Family Cars, including Equinox, Suburban and Traverse. The list represents the kbb.com editors’ recommendations for the best vehicles for families, based on factors such as resale value, fuel efficiency, capability and kid-friendliness. Here’s what Kelley Blue Book’s editors had to say about the Chevrolet line-up:

2010 Chevrolet Traverse:
Boasting more cargo volume than even its Chevy Tahoe stablemate, the Traverse is the biggest crossover on the road—yet it beats the fuel economy of many smaller three-row vehicles. We like both of the Traverse’s siblings—the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia—but the Chevrolet’s lower starting price makes it our choice for families.

2010 Chevrolet Suburban
Even when carrying nine passengers, the Chevy Suburban still offers a cavernous 45.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Still not enough? Hook up a trailer and the Suburban can tow up to 9,600 pounds. Beyond sheer size and strength, the Suburban delivers a comfortable ride and plenty of occupant-coddling niceties.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox
In the highly populated crossover category, the Chevy Equinox stands out from the crowd as a vehicle that competently embodies function and form. In addition to an upscale interior and bold exterior styling, the Equinox is also able to achieve a class-leading 32 mpg on the highway (in four-cylinder form).

“The factors Kelley Blue Book editors consider are in line with what we believe appeals to modern families who consider Chevrolet vehicles,” says Jim Campbell, Chevrolet General Manager. “As such, it’s no coincidence that Equinox, Traverse, and Suburban assembly plants are all running overtime to keep up with customer demand.”

2010 Camaro – What’s The Best Choice

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

When it comes to speed and performance, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is on par with the best in the business. Concept to manufacture of the 2010 Camaro was only 3 years and enthusiasts wanted it even sooner.

Top competitors Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger were already on the scene when the 2010 Camaro debuted but the new kid on the block is taking out the competition as if it were brought back for only that reason.

Don’t take our word for it, come drive one after you’ve experienced the competition because this will be your last stop, no sense in having to make two trips. The Camaro has it all wrapped up and anyone who has driven one will be able to share what you have in store for yourself. Or read the many online articles that compare these three and you’ll see a common theme, the Camaro is on a completely different level.

The fifth generation Camaro comes in a LS, LT, or SS package. The LT and LS models have a 3.6-liter V6 engine that provides about 300 HP and 273 lb. ft. of torque and 0 to 60 MPH in approximately 6.1 seconds. Not bad for a V6, in fact it surpasses the V6 versions of the competitors we mentioned.

Camaros are also equipped with the latest six-speed automatic transmission (optional) or the standard Aisin AY6 six-speed manual transmission depending on your preference. For those of you who like the automatic, you’ll be pleased with it’s 4.07:1 first gear ratio, just forewarn any female passengers that putting makeup on could be a challenge.

Having a weight of about 3700 lbs, it features four-wheel independent and stability standard. It is said that the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has an ideal weight distribution–ideal for high speeds.

The 2010 Camaro generates more horsepower than Mustang, even with the V6 engine. It also has the largest fuel tank capacity (19 gallons), with a fuel economy of 29 mpg highway, greater than that of its competitors.

The Chevrolet Camaro also has the longest powertrain warranty: 5 years/100,000 miles. With these clear advantages in performance, there is no doubt that the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro can ride with the best sport cars and perform well.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, proves that history can repeat itself and a heads up to rivals that the Camaro is back and better than ever.

Chevy & Fuel Efficiency

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Chevy Aveo RS, Chevy Spark and Chevy Cruze
The majority of cars at this year’s North American International Auto Show were of the small car segment, delivering a dedication towards producing better fuel efficiency and sleek design.

The Chevy lineup consisting of the Chevy Aveo RS, the Chevy Cruze, Chevy Spark and the Chevy Volt were indicators of this new focus on small but sharp design.

Chevrolet has taken huge steps to produce a small car lineup, and the positive energy and sincere dedication to produce high quality and efficiency speaks through these cars.

The Chevy Volt, is in a class of it’s own since it’s able to operate completely on battery for a range of 40 miles. If the Volt were available now, it’s likely they’d sell every single one of them.

This focus on the small car segment is Chevrolet’s entrance in competing on a global scale with the best engineering technology for fuel efficiency.

Chevrolet offers a clean and coherent design both interior and exterior to captivate and encourage new drivers.

The line up is both economical and eco-friendly, a combination that would be a success in and of itself, but add elegant design and people get really excited.

The 1st of the Chevy trio of small cars is the Aveo RS, which was met with extreme excitement and enthusiasm by the press as well as the audience to see a global competitor in the small car segment. It’s an inspiration to the employees as well as the customers who plan to own one.

Chevrolet is after the younger generations given the features that were built into Chevy Aveo RS.

Chevy Cruze which has been on sale in other countries around the world, has strong acceptance, with a US release date sometime in 2011. The Cruze provides a strong mid size car presence.

It offers technology improvements and amenities in fuel economy with an expected price that will meet the demands of the segment without being too costly.

Chevrolet Cruz is expected to get to produce about a 40 mile per gallon on the highway, with it’s turbocharged four cylinder engine.

The Chevy Spark, a 5-door and the smallest one of the entire Chevy Trio, which should go on sale in 2012.

The smallest cars seem to be making the biggest impact on the market, so it’s not surprising to see Chevy putting itself in the market with such clear intentions on it’s future focus.

Chevrolet Volt Tests New Alert System

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

One of the most concerning issues with regards to hybrid or electric vehicles is that they operate in nearly complete silence. If you’ve been walking through a parking garage and became startled by a vehicle pulling out you’ll know what it’s like. The hybrid operates entirely on electric power making these vehicles dangerous to pedestrians.

Fortunately, the Chevy Volt has taken this matter seriously while companies such as Tesla, known for their $100,000 electric sports car, has treated the issue as less than a priority. Perhaps the fact that not many Tesla’s at $100k a pop will be silencing the nations roadways any time soon, but the fact is it needs to have some sort of sound that would symbolize it’s presence.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also behind this silent operation problem and expect to see some requirements soon that will mandate the use of an audible alert system for any vehicle that isn’t making people aware of it’s presence.

The Chevy Volt engineering team decided to host an event at the GM Milford Proving Grounds to demonstrate the alert system they’ve been working on. When a pedestrian approaches the vehicle within close proximity a pulsation sound from the horn system is emitted to alert of it’s presence.

GM has more work ahead of them since the horn sound doesn’t seem like it would be pleasing for the driver to hear ad nauseam. For some reason, the baseball card in the spokes of a bmx seems to come to mind here and it wouldn’t be surprising if something clever by the owner could be done to make this sound problem a fun one to solve.
