When the first Chevrolet was built in 1911 in a rented garage near downtown Detroit, it began a journey that has taken Chevrolet to every corner of the planet. A hundred years and more than 209 million cars and trucks later, Chevrolet is one of the world’s largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries.

Global mainstream brand

Chevrolet is becoming GM’s global mainstream brand, the foundation of the company’s business in most major markets. In recent years, Chevrolet has expanded from its traditional markets in North and South America, and its list of Top 10 markets now includes China, Russia, Uzbekistan and India.

Chevrolet today sells more than 60 percent of its vehicles outside the United States. Last year, Chevrolet sold a record 4.26 million cars and trucks, and was the only Top Five global auto brand to grow its market share. This year, Chevrolet is on track to post its best sales in its 100-year history.

Cars and trucks to enhance life’s journey

“Like many of the strongest global brands, Chevrolet is founded in American values that are admired around the world,” said Perry. “Chevrolets are built to enhance everyday life, and to enable people to do more and experience more as they travel through their life’s journey.”

Chevrolet’s deep roots in American culture resonate with many customers around the world, who share the belief that getting behind the wheel is as much about the drive as it is about the destination. This emotional connection between Chevrolet and its customers is so deep that more than 700 popular songs and dozens of films include Chevrolet in some way.

New global products fuel growth

New, globally designed-and-produced models are behind Chevrolet’s record growth. For example, the Chevrolet Cruze is on pace this year to mark 1 million in total sales since its launch. Cruze went on sale in the United States last year, and is now the nation’s best-selling compact car, surpassing all Asian, European and U.S. competitors.

An all-new Malibu sedan will launch this fall in South Korea, along with a global midsize Colorado pickup in Thailand. An all-new Sonic subcompact (Aveo in global markets) goes on sale this fall in the United States, followed by the Spark mini-car in 2012.

Chevrolet was founded on building affordable cars and trucks with style, value and features not offered by competitors. For example, in 1955, Chevrolet re-engineered the V-8 engine in a way that made performance accessible to millions of new customers. The result was the small-block V-8, named by WardsAuto as one of the 10 Best Engines of the 20th Century.

This spirit of innovation continues today. A new Malibu Eco model will include eAssist technology that improves fuel economy by approximately 25 percent. Last year, the first Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle rolled off an assembly line near Detroit, combining electric power and a small range-extending gas engine. The Volt and Malibu are part of Chevrolet’s global electrification strategy to reduce petroleum use and vehicle emissions.

Chevrolet was created in 1911 by auto pioneer and industrialist William C. Durant and Swiss-born race car driver Louis Chevrolet. Durant believed Chevrolet should produce cars offering more style and value than the volume leaders of the time, most notably the Model T.

On the afternoon of May 22nd, the deadliest tornado in 70 years struck our neighbors to the Northeast at Joplin, MO. This EF-5 with winds of up to 200 mph destroyed or mangled 6,000 homes and left over 600 animals still in limbo. This tornado killed almost 150 people and left thousands scrambling for shelter, food and clothing.

Since then, hundreds, if not thousands of volunteers have shown up to assist in the clean-up effort. Thousands have donated to the Relief Effort. Organizations such as the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and others have been in Joplin since Day One. You can help in various ways such as making a donation on your Cell Phone. Some who will be excited about this extra room are moms who have felt the Pilot isn’t enough space for two kids in the back and a passenger upfront. Add on top of that a small cargo space and you have a vehicle that is disproportionate.

There is no doubt that Chevy can make big SUVs, from Chevy Tahoe to the Chevrolet Suburban. These fulfill the needs of a larger cargo space requirement, and the Traverse fills the remaining gaps.

Room for three rows of seats and plenty of payload is efficiently packaged in the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. The environment is packed with technology and assembled with care, and the design wraps around occupants with a tasteful stylishness. Seven or eight passengers can be accommodated in the Traverse’s flexible interior. For full passenger capacity, a 60/40-split bench provides second-row seating. Captains’ chairs can be specified for the second row, instead, and the third row is split 60/40 to offer passenger space and cargo flexibility. Plenty of room is left behind the third row, unlike some vehicles that are so crammed full of seats that you must choose between carrying people or stuff because you can’t carry both.

It’s not just a big box with plenty of seats either. The Chevrolet Traverse carries lots of value for its $29,224 starting MSRP. Climate control with rear-seat controls, cruise control, a six-speaker audio system with an auxiliary input, MP3 playback and a three-month trial of XM Satellite Radio is standard equipment. Eight-passenger seating is also standard in the LS and 1LT trim levels. Stepping up from the LS trim through two levels of LT and to the top-dog LTZ nets plenty of comfort, convenience and luxury.

Available upgrades make the Traverse an even better fit for your life. Technology like a rearview camera integrated into the mirror (available in 1LT; standard in 2LT and LTZ) and an available ultrasonic parking assist system (standard in all but LS) helps keep the bodywork free from accidental scuffs. A power liftgate is standard on 2LT and LTZ trim levels, along with three-zone automatic climate controls, an upgraded 10-speaker Bose audio system and second-row captains’ chairs. Traverse LTZs are the most luxurious with perforated leather upholstery in the first two rows and heated and cooled front seats. Families will love the available DVD entertainment system, and you’ll all get there safely and securely with the optional navigation system that incorporates standard OnStar Directions and Connections.

Also helping you arrive without incident is the Traverse’s refined powertrain. All versions use a direct injected 3.6-liter V6 with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) that packs 288 hp (281 with single exhaust) and teams with an advanced six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is one of the biggest feathers in the cap of the Traverse. SUVs equipped with four-wheel drive have gotten families to Grandmother’s in time for Christmas dinner for ages at the expense of tidy on-road behavior and a large appetite for fuel. An all-wheel drive Traverse is even more secure in inclement weather with its intelligent system actively distributing the engine’s power based on speed and traction. Standard StabiliTrak stability control with traction control intervenes to keep things upright and moving forward as well.

In addition to StabiliTrak, the Traverse has a 360-degree safety system that includes a full complement of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners. The body is reinforced in key areas and high-strength steel is used in numerous places. The independent suspension offers more nimble handling than any truck-based SUV could ever pull off, too. Even though it’s not a truck, the Traverse doesn’t shy away from work. It’s capable of towing 5,200 pounds, impressive for this segment of vehicles.

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze’s class-leading safety features and structural strength were demonstrated today in a blunt manner – engineers crashed it. It was a planned test that highlighted the active and passive safety features, as well as the technology, of Chevrolet’s new, fuel-efficient sedan.  

Cruze enters the market in the third quarter of this year with more standard safety features than any vehicle in its class, each contributing to Chevrolet’s goal of protecting passengers before, during and after a crash. Highlights include: 

1. Ten standard air bags – the most in the segment – including frontal, head curtain side air bags, front and outboard rear-seat side-impact air bags and new knee air bags

2. StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensing, traction control and anti-lock brakes

3. Collapsible pedal system, which allows the pedals to detach during a crash to reduce the risk of leg or ankle injuries

4. OnStar with Automatic Crash Response.  

The Cruze’s safety development included testing at GM’s rollover test facility. It is the only manufacturer-owned rollover test facility in North America. 

“We are very confident of the safety performance of the Cruze and believe it will prove to be one of the safest vehicles in the segment,” said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director. “To benefit our customers, we went way beyond requirements to exceed government safety mandates.” 

The comprehensive list of standard safety features on all models includes: 

• Dual-stage frontal air bags
• Roof rail-mounted head curtain side air bags that help protect the front and outboard rear seating positions
• Seat-mounted side-impact air bags (front and rear)
• Front knee air bags
• Front passenger seat occupant sensing system
• Rollover sensing and protection system
• Collapsible pedal assembly
• Three-point safety belts in all five seating positions
• Safety belt retractor pretensioners and lap pretensioners in the driver and front-passenger positions
• Safety belt load limiters (with pretensioners) in the front safety belt retractorChild seat latching system in the rear seat.  

Along with the standard safety features on all models – including a tire pressure monitoring system, daytime running lamps and automatic headlamps – LT and LTZ models include four-wheel disc brakes and offer rear-parking assist. 

A strong foundation 

The Cruze has a strong, unitized body structure that incorporates high-strength steel (HSS) in key areas to enhance strength and crash protection. It is used to help prevent intrusion into passenger compartment. The Cruze also features underbody main rails that extend from the front of the structure all the way to the rear, further enhancing the body’s strength and stiffness. A cross-structure beam behind the instrument panel anchors some vehicle features, while supporting the body during side-impact crashes. 

Cruze’s safety has been recognized in markets around the globe where it is already sold. For example, it earned the top rating of five stars in European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP) testing. According to EuroNCAP, the Cruze scored 79 points out of 100, making it one of the safest models in the passenger car class. The Cruze achieved 96 percent in adult occupant protection, making it the runner-up this year and beating all tested premium brands. The Cruze received a maximum 16 points in the frontal offset collision test and a maximum eight points in the side-impact crash test against a moving deformable barrier. The Cruze is the first passenger car to receive maximum scores in both tests since EuroNCAP began providing crash test ratings in 1997. 

OnStar with Automatic Crash Response 

OnStar is standard and includes Automatic Crash Response and its latest enhancement, Injury Severity Prediction. This feature helps OnStar advisors alert first responders when a vehicle crash is likely to have caused serious injury to the occupants. 

With Automatic Crash Response, OnStar uses data from a collection of built-in vehicle sensors that can signal an advisor for help if the vehicle is involved in a moderate to severe frontal, rear or side-impact crash, regardless of whether an air bag deploys. 

Injury Severity Prediction uses an algorithm based on critical crash details, such as severity and direction of impact force, air bag deployments and whether there were multiple impacts or a vehicle rollover, to inform an OnStar advisor if there is a high probability of severe injury to vehicle occupants. Advisors can then relay this to the 9-1-1 operator, helping first responders prepare for what they may likely encounter at the crash scene and provide faster, more tailored help for the injured. 

With more than 14 years of experience, OnStar has provided assistance in nearly 140,000 Automatic Crash Responses and received more than 1 million emergency calls for help.
